Introduction 

AP Michael Chia is Head of the Physical Education and Sports Science Group who is much enthused and motivated in helping NIE achieve her mission of being an Institute of Distinction and emergent global institution renown for her teacher-training excellence and evidence-led educational and applied research. He marshals a talented multi-national staff in helping trainees become well-prepared practitioners as PE teachers, who are passionate and pure in the practice of their craft, are independent lifelong learners, are creative and critical thinkers and are socially responsible citizens of Singapore.

Education 

AP Michael Chia was a pioneer graduate of the College of Physical Education set up to train specialist physical education teachers in 1984. He graduated with Distinction Diploma in Physical Education.  AP Michael Chia earned an inaugural scholarship from an Independent School to read Physical Education and Sports Science at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom where he graduated with first class honours. AP Michael Chia completed his doctoral studies in Exercise and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom on a staff development scholarship from NTU and was also awarded an Academic Staff Scholarship from the Association of Commonwealth Universities in the UK. His PhD focused on the high intensity performance of young people. 

Research interests 

AP Michael Chia is active in research, especially in the areas of paediatric exercise physiology and health and fitness of young people. He has more than 120 journal papers, books, monographs, book chapters, conference papers, internet publications and associated articles. He has made about 50 presentations, invited keynote lectures, and talks to national and international audiences. He has also supervised seven graduate students to the attainment of PhD and Master Degrees and is currently supervising another three. AP Michael Chia is keen promoter of innovation and enterprise and some of his collaborative research with NIE colleagues resulted in application deliverables, which were patented- HealthTrek Information Tracking SystemPatent and trademarked- Sports Science in Sporting SuccessTrademark. These innovations can be exploited for educational and commercial purposes. AP Michael Chia is currently researching on the sensitive ages of physical fitness development and physical activity among young people in schools as a principal investigator in a segment of an MOE-funded and PESS-led project on Teaching and Learning in Physical Education. Other on-going research projects involve the longitudinal monitoring of repeated sprint performance indices of youth professional footballers and the longitudinal assessment of dietary practices, body composition and genetic markers of national level body builders. A recent school-based research is examining the holistic evidence for PRIDE for PLAY. He is also garnering research evidence for a dose-response link to the amount of accumulated physical activity and metabolic syndrome X in young people. 

Professional contributions 

AP Michael Chia is on the Section Editor for Health-related Fitness for the Asian Journal of Exercise and Sports Science and he is on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching, and The Open Education Journal. He is a regular reviewer for the European Journal of Physical Education, Health Promotion and Education, the Asian Journal of Exercise and Sports Sciences, European Physical Education Review, Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism and the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching. AP Michael Chia is sought after as Symposia Chairman and Scientific Reviewer for International Conferences in Physical Education, Health and Exercise and Exercise Physiology in Hong Kong and Japan. AP Michael Chia has been an International Examiner for many PhD and Master Theses from regional universities and is an International Grant Assessor for the Hong Kong Grants Committee. AP Michael Chia was the External Examiner for the Master Degree Programme in Sports Science, in the Faculty of Medicine and Health of Universiti Sains Malaysia. AP Michael Chia served on many National Review Committees on physical fitness, sport education, physical activity, exercise and nutrition. AP Michael Chia was also on the School Appraisal Team for the Schools Excellence Model. He is on the Selection Panel of the MCYS for the Outstanding Youth in Education Award 2008-2009.

Awards 

AP Michael Chia received the NTU Long Service Award (15 years) in 2006, the NTU Tenure Award in 2006 and the NIE Commendation Awards for Excellence in Teaching in 2001, 2002 and 2003, the NTU Staff Development Award and Association of Commonwealth Universities Academic Staff Scholarship in 1995, the MCYS Overseas Youth Award in 1993, the SJI Scholarship Award in 1989 and the CPE Distinction Teacher of Physical Education and CPE Best Diploma Student Awards in 1986.
